National Women’s Political Caucus Statement Minnesota Shootings

By June 17, 2025No Comments

(Washington, DC – June 17, 2025) The National Women’s Political Caucus is heartbroken by Saturday’s politically motivated shooting that took the lives of Minnesota State Representative and Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman. Our hearts go out to their family, colleagues, and community. We also extend our prayers for a full and swift recovery to State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who were critically injured in a related  shooting earlier that morning.

This horrific act of targeted political violence stands in direct opposition to the values of democracy, respect, and public service. Yet, in the face of such tragedy, we are uplifted by the countless voices around the country reaffirming their commitment to peaceful advocacy and civic engagement. It is our sincere hope that this moment galvanizes communities to reject violence, protect our public servants, and safeguard our democratic institutions. As a former elected official,  I understand the choices our leaders have to make every day and their commitments to the communities they serve.  We remain committed to building a future where leaders can serve without fear and citizens can speak without threat.
